Ski Shopping Guide makes ski gear shopping legible. What does this gear actually cost, what does it actually do, and how does it compare against alternatives? We present the verified facts, the documented specs, and the sourced reviews. You weigh them.
Why we do this
The first ski trip is expensive and confusing. Most newcomers walk into a wall of marketing claims with no neutral reference to check them against. Existing ski shopping content is mostly ranking-driven affiliate pages or retailer catalogs. Both have their place, neither functions as a neutral reference. The third option that didn't exist when we started: a reference site with documented methodology, public ratings, and no commercial pressure on which products get recommended. This is the reference we wished existed. So we built it.
There's also a longer reason. Skiing depends on snow. Snow depends on a climate cold enough to produce winters, and the climate has measurably shifted in recent decades. The team behind this site would like to still be skiing in twenty or thirty years, and we'd like the next generation to learn the way we did. Gear choices are small individual decisions inside a much larger collective question, but a public, sourced record of what each brand actually documents about its practice is a useful tool for the people making those choices. The State of Snow page documents what's verifiable about the broader picture. We link every claim on the State of Snow page to a primary source.
That's the why. The work is mostly unpaid right now. The site has no affiliate income, no sponsorship, no commercial relationships. The team does the research because we want this reference to exist and because the alternative is letting another decade of misleading affiliate listicles set the terms of the conversation.
What we publish
Three kinds of content, one ethic underneath all three. We make information legible and let the reader decide. No rankings invented for the sake of clicks. No verdicts where documentation will do.
Shopping tools. Boot size charts, ski length calculators, helmet fit guides, DIN setting charts, pole and snowboard sizing. The tools are not garnish. The single most wasteful part of online gear shopping is the wrong-size return. A return is a journey: shipped to the customer, shipped back, often re-shipped or sometimes landfilled. About a quarter of returned online apparel never gets resold. Helping a reader buy the right size the first time contributes more measurable waste reduction than most of the visible "eco" claims brands make about their products.
Buying guides. Best for X awards across each gear category, with runner-up positions where the category supports them. The categories are public ("Best Overall", "Best Budget", "Best for Cold Climates", "Best for Narrow Feet", and so on) and the criteria are stated on each page. No combined product score across multiple dimensions; the prose of each pick handles performance and durability in plain English. A reader who wants the quick answer gets the named pick. A reader who wants the comparison reads the runners-up.
Who writes this site
Ski Shopping Guide is written by a small editorial team based across the United States. The team includes skiers who live and ski in the Northeast, the Rockies, and the Pacific Northwest, with backgrounds spanning ski instruction, bootfitting, gear retail, outdoor journalism, and engineering. Many entries on this site began as private research notes accumulated over years of running into the same gaps between manufacturer marketing and actual on-snow performance.
We use an institutional byline rather than personal bylines because the work depends on a documented process, not on any one person's credentials. The credential is the methodology. This is closer to how Wirecutter or The Economist operate than how a personal blog does. Named contributors with verifiable credentials may appear on specific entries where their expertise is directly relevant (a working bootfitter writing the boot-fitting section, an instructor reviewing the lift-use guide, and so on).
The four-perspective publication test
Before any entry is published, four perspectives must be satisfied. If any perspective would object, the entry is revised or pulled.
- Would a first-time skier find the entry useful without being overwhelmed?
- Would a working bootfitter or ski instructor find the technical claims accurate?
- Would a consumer-protection journalist find the entry free of misleading claims, hidden bias, or unverifiable assertions?
- Would a skeptical r/skiing veteran find it credible (no marketing tropes, no false "we tested" claims, no awards without public criteria)?
This is the operating definition of "neutral and useful" on this site. It's also why entries take the time they take.

The site has no affiliate programs, sponsorships, or commercial relationships at this time. Outbound retailer links are provided for reader convenience only. We earn nothing from them.
If this changes (most likely a transparent affiliate program at some point), every page that contains commercial links will carry clear disclosure consistent with FTC guidelines, and the editorial firewall will be documented on the disclosure page. The four-perspective test continues to apply regardless.
